How To Send Your Hard Drive to us SafelyTurn off your computer and unplug the power cord from the back. Find the screws (usually at the back of your computer) which hold the case, and remove them. You will need a philips (x shaped) head screwdriver.
Remove the case. In the example above, the whole case slides off backwards. In the newer computer below, there are two side panels which lift out.
Touch your hands to the metal casing of the computer to discharge any static electricity. If you have to go away from the computer before you finish removing and packing your hard disk, touch the casing again each time. Find the hard disk. Unlike floppy disks and CD or DVD drives, hard disks have no opening or slot at the front. Gently remove the power and data cables. This is a SATA disk. The data cable is the red cable on the left, the other is the power cable.
Older ATA drives have a wider cable like this:
You may need to jiggle this cable (gently!) from side to side to get it out. Leave the cables attached to the computer. When you have removed the cables from the hard disk, remove the screws that hold the hard disk in place.
Gently slide the hard disk out of the computer.
If you have an anti-static bag, put the disk in it and seal it with tape.
If you don't have an anti-static bag, wrap your disk in aluminium foil, then a freezer bag or small plastic shopping bag. Then wrap the drive in bubble wrap.
Do not send your drive in a padded bag! Padded bags do not offer enough protection from knocks and accidents. Place the wrapped drive in a box, using more bubble wrap if necessary to ensure it is packed in firmly.
Send your disk via Express or Registered post to: Include your contact details including email address. Tell us briefly what you would like us to do. As soon as your disk arrives we will email you to confirm we have received it safely. After analysis we will send you another email confirming we can recover your files, and a PayPal invoice. We will then recover your files and return your disk and a CD, DVD or external hard drive containing your recovered files. We accept media from anywhere in the world and pay return postage.
